For a second I felt the old
impulses rising up, the ones that were so strong in the early days
of sampling: the mild outrage, the old worries about "authorship" and
whatnot. Sure, I was fairly certain that Eric B had taken the bass
line from someplace else: but once a bass line’s been sampled
on a completely classic track, isn’t there some sort of honor
system that says you really can’t sample that one again? And
if such a system isn’t in place, oughtn’t one be? Head
nodding, corny Doc Marten’d foot tapping, I sat here for a
minute thinking about whether there’s a "once-it’s-been-sampled-then-it’s-been-sampled" rule,
and then a remarkable thing happened. Snoop Dogg started putting
his rap down, and the rap in question was, in fact, "Paid in
Full." |
