But the main thing that comes
through is the naked joy of just playing somebody else’s song
because you think the song is so damned cool, which is in fact the
entire point of Snoop’s version of "Paid in Full." It’s
what’s missing from practically every other cover you ever
hear: by the time most bands get done recording covers of other people’s
stuff, they’ve audibly overthought the whole affair for so
long that all the joy has been scrubbed clean off. When it’s
a pop-punk band doing the covering, you can practically hear the
sound of the band practice at which the idea for the cover was born: "Hey,
that sounded like that fuckin’ Michael Jackson song!" "Dude,
no way, we should totally do ‘Smooth Criminal!" And so
on. What you get from that sort of thing is a bad taste in your mouth. |
