There were a
few of us in those days whod argue, sometimes just for the sake of
argument, that no form was in and of itself bad. It wasnt hard to
make this argument at first, especially with David Bowie having so recently
shot the videos from his Scary Monsters album - the Ashes to
Ashes video, for example, with its haunting images of black ocean
waves crashing against washed-out negative-image crags, and Bowie in a post-apocalyptic
harlequin costume walking side by side down the beach with his mother, then
in her mid-sixties: all by itself Ashes to Ashes made the case
in favor of exploring the music videos potential uses. Over time thereve
been a few others who seem to want to make the short-form video a creative
space for good work - the Residents; New Order; Tom Petty; the Beastie Boys;
Public Enemy - but most of the time its been exactly the completely
worthless crap that the music-video-must-be-killed camp was prophesying
all along.
