Why didn’t I get it when it came
out? What is wrong with me? I still can’t figure that out. Maybe
I was busy, or drunk, or in jail or something, I don’t know.
Opeth’s last one, Blackwater Park, still gets better every time
I listen to it; lots of bands have tried mixing “death” vocals
with “clean” vocals (for those of you not conversant in
metalspeak, that means “one guy growling or bellowing and the
other guy actually singing in key”), but everybody else sounds
like they couldn’t decide which way to do it and so they’ve
decided to try doing both at once. Only Opeth can make it sound like
this was their first choice: like they’re not trying to have
their cake and eat it, too. Opeth don’t sound like they’re
trying too hard to do anything, to be honest. And that, friends, is
the Big Difference. |
