But let there be no mistake about it. There’s
a reason why I’m not song-by-songing Deliverance or describing
any of the individual tracks, and the reason is that in my secret heart,
I think this is much closer to art than enterprise. There’s a
passion at work in Opeth’s Metheny-tinged slow interludes, and
there’s a hunger in the loud crunchy parts. Generally speaking,
I prefer death metal to metalcore, metalcore to melodic death, melodic
death to black metal, and black metal to power metal. Opeth is above
all that. They just make incredibly good records. I read an interview
with them a few months ago where they claimed that they hardly ever
practice. I believe it. What they do has to it the natural charm of
something spontaneously created & deeply felt. They’ve apparently
got a new album out already called Damnation, on which I’ll report
to you in a more timely manner than I have in the present case. Assuming
I don’t wind up in the pokey again, that is, which is a big “if.” I’ll
see you next week. |
