When I say that Opeth isn’t trying
too hard, I don’t mean that the music they play is simple. It’s
not. What I mean is that Opeth attacks their craft with the assured
poise of a card hustler. It’s in their interest to make it look
like they’re not breaking a sweat, and so they’ve made
that a priority. There are two ways of going about this. One is to
make an album like Twin Infinitives by the Royal Trux, where the songs
are audibly being written while the tape is still rolling. When everything
comes together this way and a moment gets born: terrific! The rest
of the time, it’s noise, which is fine in its own way, too. |
