Well. But this is exactly what makes them
great; what elevates them above their peers, and what allows them to
fill with dust the mouths of those people playing in bands who actually-on-purpose
call their own music “prog metal.” Opeth busts out 12-minute
multi-part jams that sound like they just happened that way. Listening
to them, you can’t imagine that anybody involved ever thought: “Damn,
I rule: my songs are longer than the average twenty-one-year-old’s
attention span!” Rather, all you hear is the band’s total
engagement with their craft. And it’s so completely captivating,
so constantly and consistenly entrancing, that I was almost driven
to say “the band’s total engagement with their art,” but
you gotta draw the line somewhere when you’ve stopped thinking
and started gushing, and for me, that’s it. |
